A month away from training
I love to play cricket and it is my dream to wear the Baggy Green. It has been about 3 years since I first started training properly. Waking up early, getting to the field and having a good session of at least 3 hours before school. Although it can be tough and tiring sometimes I still keep going because I know practicing every day is what is going to get me there.
It has been nearly two weeks since I first fractured my finger while exercising at training. The moment my coach saw the finger he said, “It might be broken.” My coach took me to the hospital and we got to know it was badly broken the bone was out of place and I would need surgery to get the bone straight.
I reached the hospital at 7:00 am the next day all fasted and ready for my surgery. We waited almost all morning and afternoon to get to the theatre for my surgery to be done. I was given some anesthesia and then, fell asleep.
I did not know the time when I woke up, all I heard was the nurse telling me to wake up. When we asked, how long I would have to be on a break, we were told 4–6 weeks but from cricket specifically, possibly 8 weeks. I just could not imagine so long away from the game. I have had injuries before but I have never had to take a break for more than two weeks so it was hard to take it in.
But it is another way of giving me a rest and to come back fully refreshed. It is also another opportunity to get the mental side of the game better and to make my left hand stronger so that when batting, my left hand dominates more.
Initially, it was hard to stay at home and not be out on the field playing but this time has helped me do other things, like write this article.
